There are currently 2648 abandoned villages and towns in Spain, empties or with fewer than a hundred inhabitants. In Catalonia, there are 257 of these locations, small places founded in ancient times, that have gradually gotten empty for several reasons: by the migration of its inhabitants to bigger cities, the lack of basic public services, natural disasters or violent acts during the Spanish Civil War.

 

We have traveled about 745 mi along the Pyrenees searching for some of these places. Lost towns in the middle of nowhere, some covered by nature and others without access roads. In many cases, not even the three maps or the two GPSs we had helped us to find them. This was a trip to a blurred past, to places that have stopped in time, a vague memory of what they used to be, locations that (almost) do not exist anymore…

En España, actualmente hay 2648 pueblos abandonados o en los cuales habitan menos de cien personas. Tan solo en Cataluña, existen 257 de estas localidades. Pequeños lugares de periodos remotos que se han ido quedado vacíos y de los cuales no existe una sola razón para el abandono; hay versiones que culpan a la falta de servicios públicos, otras porque se han secado o desbordado los ríos. Algunos lo adjudican a fenómenos paranormales y otros a hechos violentos como la Guerra Civil Española.

Recorrimos cerca de 1200 km a lo largo de los Pirineos para ir en búsqueda de esos lugares. Pueblos perdidos en la nada, algunos cubiertos por la naturaleza y otros sin caminos de acceso que nos llevaran hasta allí. En muchos casos, ni siquiera los tres mapas y dos  GPS que llevábamos  nos ayudaron a encontrarlos. Este es un viaje a un pasado desdibujado, a un tiempo detenido. Es el registro de una memoria difusa, del olvido, de lo que ya no existe, de la nada…
